Seit fast 20 Jahren leben Ebbo und Vera Velten in verschiedenen afrikanischen Ländern. Ebbo leitet ein Schlafkrankheitsprojekt. Seine Arbeit füllt ihn aus. Vera hingegen fühlt sich zunehmend verloren in der internationalen Community von Yaoundé. Sie leidet unter der Trennung von ihrer Tochter Helen, 14, die in Deutschland ein Internat besucht. Ebbo muss sein Leben in Afrika aufgeben oder er verliert die Frau, die er liebt. Aber mit jedem Tag wächst seine Angst vor der Rückkehr in ein Land, das ihm fremd geworden ist.
Jahre später. Alex Nzila, ein junger französischer Mediziner mit kongolesischen Wurzeln, reist nach Kamerun. Er soll ein Entwicklungshilfeprojekt evaluieren. Schon lange hat er den Kontinent nicht mehr betreten. Doch statt auf neue Perspektiven trifft er auf einen destruktiven, verlorenen Menschen: wie ein Phantom entzieht sich Ebbo seinem Gutachter.
